No surprises: how JNRT charges

Nothing to submit

Submission and peer review are free. You are never asked for money to have your work considered.

Pay only on acceptance

The APC of $2,100 is invoiced after an accept decision and before publication. Rejected manuscripts are never charged.

One all-inclusive fee

No page charges, no colour charges, no hidden extras, and every paper gets Single-blind (double-blind on request) peer review.

Support for authors

Fee waivers, reductions and institutional billing

We want capable neurology research published regardless of budget. If cost is a barrier, ask the editorial office before or at submission. Decisions never depend on ability to pay.

Financial hardship

Considered case-by-case where research funding genuinely is not available. Editorial decisions never depend on ability to pay.

Institutional agreements

Negotiated rates and direct billing for partner institutions and consortia.

Student-led research

Reduced rates for bona fide student-led neurology projects.

To request a waiver or reduced rate, email [email protected] with your manuscript title and a brief note on your circumstances. Waivers are considered by exception; there is no standing or recurring discount.

Withdrawal and refunds

If your plans change after you have paid

A clear policy, because you should know it before you commit a budget, not after.

  • If we reject your manuscript, no charge. You are never charged for a manuscript that is not accepted. The APC applies only to accepted papers.
  • Free to withdraw within 3 days of submission. You can withdraw your manuscript at no cost within three days of submitting it.
  • After 3 days, a withdrawal charge of 30% of the APC applies. Once peer review is under way, an author-initiated withdrawal is charged at 30% of the article processing charge, covering the editorial and review work already performed.
  • Always withdraw formally first. Submitting the same manuscript to another journal without an official withdrawal is dual submission, a form of research misconduct under our editorial policies.
  • Duplicate or mistaken charges are refunded in full. Any payment taken in error is returned in full.
  • After publication. A published article is permanently open access under CC BY 4.0 and cannot be un-published, so the APC is non-refundable once your article is live. Any subsequent concern is handled under our corrections and retractions policy.
Questions

Article processing charges: FAQ

Straight answers on fees, timing, waivers and what the charge includes.

Is there a fee to submit to JNRT?
No. There is no submission fee and no peer-review fee. The article processing charge (APC) applies only if your manuscript is accepted for publication.
When is the APC charged?
Only after a manuscript is accepted, and before final publication. Nothing is charged during submission or peer review.
What if my manuscript is rejected?
You pay nothing. Because the APC is charged only on acceptance, a manuscript rejected during peer review carries no charge at any point.
How much is the APC?
A single charge of $2,100 applies to all article types: research articles, reviews, case reports and short communications. It is a one-time charge on acceptance, in US dollars.
Are there extra charges for colour figures or page count?
No. Colour figures are published online at no extra cost, and there are no per-page charges. The APC is the single, all-inclusive fee.
Can I withdraw my manuscript, and is there a charge?
You can withdraw free of charge within three days of submission. After that, an author-initiated withdrawal carries a charge of 30% of the APC, reflecting the editorial and peer-review work already performed. Withdrawing formally matters: submitting the same manuscript elsewhere without an official withdrawal is dual submission, a form of research misconduct. If the journal rejects your manuscript you pay nothing, payments taken in error are refunded in full, and once an article is published it is permanently open access under CC BY 4.0 and the APC is non-refundable.
Can my institution or funder pay directly?
Yes. We accept institutional purchase orders and can arrange direct billing to universities, research organisations and funders. An itemised invoice is provided.
Are fee waivers or discounts available?
Yes, by exception. We consider genuine financial hardship case-by-case, negotiate institutional rates, and offer reduced rates for student-led research. There is no standing or recurring discount. Ask the editorial office before or at submission, and decisions never depend on ability to pay.
What does the APC pay for?
Peer-review management and editorial oversight, professional copyediting and typesetting, a permanent Crossref DOI, XML and PDF production with standards-based metadata, CC BY 4.0 open-access publication, discoverability in Google Scholar and OpenAlex, and long-term preservation.
Who owns the copyright after publication?
You do. Articles are published open access under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 (CC BY 4.0) licence. Authors retain copyright, and readers may share and reuse the work with attribution.
