Overview

Veterinary oncology is the branch of veterinary medicine devoted to the diagnosis, treatment, and study of cancer in animals. It addresses the tumors that affect companion animals such as dogs and cats, as well as livestock and other species, applying principles of pathology, surgery, medical oncology, and supportive care adapted to each patient. Cancer is a common and serious disease in animals, and veterinary oncologists work to characterize tumors, determine their behavior and likely course, and select treatments that may include surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, and newer targeted approaches, while weighing the animal's quality of life. The field also contributes to comparative oncology, since many animal cancers resemble their human counterparts and can inform understanding of cancer biology more broadly. Research collected on this page reflects these themes, including studies of mammary tumors in female dogs and the relationship between tissue markers, inflammatory infiltrate, and tumor aggressiveness, as well as work on canine osteosarcoma, a malignant bone cancer, and investigations into its features and behavior. Together these peer-reviewed, open-access articles illustrate how veterinary oncology characterizes animal tumors and their prognostic factors. This page gathers research relevant to veterinary oncology and the study of cancer in animals.
