Overview
Venous thrombosis is the formation of a blood clot, or thrombus, within a vein. When a clot develops in the deep veins, most commonly of the legs, the condition is known as deep vein thrombosis, which can cause pain, swelling, warmth, and redness in the affected limb. The most serious danger is that part of the clot may break loose and travel to the lungs, producing a potentially life-threatening pulmonary embolism. Venous thrombosis arises from a combination of factors classically described as reduced blood flow, injury to the vessel wall, and increased tendency of the blood to clot, with risk raised by immobility, surgery, pregnancy and the postpartum period, certain inherited clotting disorders, and other conditions. Diagnosis relies on clinical assessment, blood tests, and imaging, and treatment centers on anticoagulant medication to prevent the clot from growing and to reduce the risk of embolism. Research published through Thrombosis and Treatments and its companion titles engages with thrombotic disease, including reports of postpartum ovarian vein thrombosis, central retinal vein occlusion, recurrent retinal vascular occlusions associated with a plasminogen activator inhibitor mutation, and large atrial thrombus. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access scholarship relevant to venous thrombosis, its risk factors, and its treatment.
