Overview
Bipolar disorder is a mental disorder characterized by extreme changes in mood that range from periods of elation, often referred to as mania, to increased energy and restlessness, to times of extreme sadness and hopelessness, known as depressive episodes. It’s estimated that 1 in 5 people with bipolar disorder will experience a manic episode at least once during their lifetime. Treatment for bipolar disorder typically involves a combination of medications and psychotherapy. By helping individuals recognize warning signs, track their moods, and manage stressors, therapy can help them better regulate their emotions. Additionally, medications help people to manage symptoms, stabilize and reduce the intensity of mood shifts, and prevent relapses. While there is no cure for bipolar disorder, treatment can help individuals lead better lives.
