Overview

Child abuse and neglect refers to the mistreatment of children by parents, caregivers, or others responsible for their welfare, encompassing physical, sexual, and emotional abuse as well as neglect, the failure to provide adequate food, supervision, shelter, medical care, or emotional support. It is a serious public-health and child-protection concern with potentially severe and long-lasting effects on a child's physical health, development, mental health, and life outcomes. Recognizing the signs, understanding risk factors, and ensuring early intervention and protective services are central to safeguarding children and supporting recovery. In the context of pediatric health and nutrition, neglect can manifest in poor growth, malnutrition, and inadequate access to healthcare, while abuse can compromise both physical and psychological wellbeing. Effective responses require coordination among healthcare providers, social services, educators, and families, along with attention to the broader social conditions that influence child welfare. Research in pediatric health relevant to vulnerable children includes the assessment of health indicators among children in care settings, such as evaluation of serum vitamin D levels in children at a foster care center, which reflects the kind of monitoring used to identify nutritional and health deficits in at-risk populations. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to child abuse, neglect, and the health and nutritional wellbeing of children.
