Overview

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a complex neurological and developmental disorder that affects communication, behavior, and social interaction. People with ASD tend to have difficulty understanding and responding to social cues, and can exhibit repeated behaviors and limited interests. Common treatments for ASD include speech therapy, behavioral therapy, and occupational therapy. ASD has a range of outcomes, from those with high-functioning autism who may attend college and live independently, to those with severe autism who may require lifelong care assistance. Early identification and intervention can lead to improved outcomes. ASD is a growing public health concern, with rising prevalence rates in recent years. With better awareness, diagnosis, and treatment, it is hoped that individuals with ASD will be able to live productive and meaningful lives.
