Overview

Pancreatic diseases are a group of disorders that affect the pancreas, a gland in the upper abdomen that serves dual roles in the body. Its exocrine tissue produces digestive enzymes that help break down fats, proteins, and carbohydrates, while its endocrine cells secrete hormones such as insulin and glucagon that regulate blood sugar. Diseases of the pancreas include acute and chronic pancreatitis, in which the gland becomes inflamed; pancreatic cancer, which often presents late and carries a serious prognosis; cystic conditions; and disorders that impair enzyme or hormone production. Common symptoms can include abdominal pain, unintended weight loss, digestive disturbances, and jaundice, and diagnosis frequently relies on imaging, laboratory tests, and biomarkers. Treatment depends on the specific condition and may range from supportive care and enzyme replacement to medication, endoscopic procedures, and surgery. As a journal centred on the pancreas, this page collects reference material relevant to the spectrum of pancreatic disorders. Related peer-reviewed work indexed here includes a clinical study of pancreatic cancer in a non-tertiary centre examining how CEA and bilirubin compare with CA 19-9 at initial presentation, and a case report of groove pancreatitis, an uncommon form of focal chronic pancreatitis. Together these open-access articles reflect ongoing clinical interest in diagnosing and managing pancreatic disease.
