Overview

Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint disease that is the most common form of arthritis. It causes pain, swelling, and stiffness in the joints due to the breakdown of cartilage, which is the cushioning material between the joints. This disease can affect any joint, but the most common areas are the hands, hips, knees, spine, and feet. Without treatment, osteoarthritis can worsen and lead to disability; however, there are treatments available to help relieve symptoms and reduce the risk of further damage. Options include physical therapy, medications, lifestyle changes, and, in some cases, surgery.
