Overview

The uterus, or womb, is a hollow, muscular organ in the female pelvis, situated between the bladder and the rectum. It is central to reproduction, providing the site where a fertilised egg implants and a fetus grows and develops during pregnancy. Its thick muscular wall, the myometrium, lined internally by the endometrium, expands greatly during gestation and contracts powerfully during labour to expel the baby, while the endometrium undergoes cyclical changes throughout the menstrual cycle. The uterus is also subject to a range of disorders, including structural anomalies, benign and malignant tumours, and complications of pregnancy. The peer-reviewed research collected here addresses several of these uterine and obstetric conditions. Case reports describe a live pregnancy in the non-communicating horn of a unicornuate uterus complicated by placenta percreta, and placenta previa in a patient with a previous caesarean delivery, both illustrating high-risk abnormalities of implantation and uterine structure. Another study reports the identification of somatic mutations in interferon-gamma signalling molecules in human uterine leiomyosarcoma, a malignant tumour of the uterine muscle. Together these open-access articles span congenital, obstetric, and oncologic aspects of uterine disease relevant to medical and surgical care.
