Overview
Pediatric urology is the medical and surgical specialty that focuses on disorders of the urinary tract and genital organs in infants, children, and adolescents. It addresses a wide range of conditions, including congenital abnormalities of the kidneys, ureters, bladder, and genitalia, urinary tract infections, urinary obstruction, vesicoureteral reflux, undescended testes, bladder and bowel dysfunction, and disorders affecting urinary continence. Because children's bodies are still developing, pediatric urological care differs from adult urology in its emphasis on growth, long-term outcomes, and conditions that are present from birth, and it often involves coordinated medical and surgical management tailored to a child's age and stage of development. Many congenital problems are now detected before or shortly after birth through prenatal and neonatal imaging, allowing earlier planning and intervention. Treatment may range from observation and medical therapy to reconstructive and minimally invasive surgery, with the goals of preserving kidney function, preventing infection and damage, and supporting normal development. Within the scope of Medical and Surgical Urology, which addresses the diagnosis and treatment of urinary and genital disorders, this page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to urological disease and its medical and surgical management.
