Overview
Steroid hormones are a class of signalling molecules derived from cholesterol that regulate a wide range of physiological processes. They include the sex hormones such as testosterone, estrogen, and progesterone, the adrenal hormones cortisol and aldosterone, and the related compound vitamin D. Produced mainly by the gonads, adrenal glands, and other tissues, steroid hormones travel through the bloodstream and act on target cells to influence growth, metabolism, reproduction, salt and water balance, and the immune response. Their actions are central to normal development and homeostasis, and disturbances in steroid hormones underlie many medical conditions.
