Overview

Neonatal neurology is a subspecialty of neurology that focuses on the diagnosis, treatment, and management of neurological disorders in newborns. It is an essential part of neonatal care, as neurological problems can be life-threatening in infants. Common conditions managed by neonatal neurologists include cerebral palsy, seizures, brain malformations, infections, and trauma. Neonatal neurologists work closely with pediatric neurologists and neonatologists in order to provide comprehensive, multidisciplinary care for newborns in need. When necessary, they may use advanced imaging techniques and may have expertise in therapeutic intervention such as hypothermia treatment and other dramatic measures to improve a newborn's neurological status. Neonatal neurology is an important field of medicine, as it can help to improve outcomes and quality of life in infants who have neurological disorders.
