Overview

Neonatal care is the specialized medical care provided to newborn infants, particularly during the first days and weeks of life, when they are most vulnerable. It encompasses the assessment and support of the newborn at and after birth, the management of common and serious conditions of the neonatal period, and intensive care for premature and critically ill infants in neonatal units. Effective neonatal care plays a key role in reducing infant mortality and improving long-term health outcomes, addressing challenges such as infection, prematurity, feeding and nutrition, and respiratory and gastrointestinal complications. Within this journal's focus on neonatology, relevant work includes a before-after trial on restricting antimicrobial usage in a tertiary care neonatal unit, a report on gastric pneumatosis in late preterm infants with necrotizing enterocolitis, a study of newborns' microRNA expression as potential biomarkers for disease diagnosis, an evaluation of how trainees identify eyes at risk for severe retinopathy of prematurity, and the development of an ultrasound-guided pericardial effusion training model for neonates. Together these reflect the breadth of neonatal care, from infection control and diagnosis to the prevention and management of complications affecting newborns. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to the topic.
