Overview

Neonatal anaemia is a lower-than-normal concentration of red blood cells or haemoglobin in a newborn infant, reducing the blood's capacity to carry oxygen to tissues. It can arise from several mechanisms, including blood loss before or during birth, increased red-cell breakdown such as in haemolytic disease of the newborn, and reduced red-cell production, with nutritional factors and prematurity also contributing. Premature infants are particularly susceptible, in part because of the physiological decline in red-cell production after birth and the cumulative effect of blood sampling. Depending on severity and cause, neonatal anaemia may be mild and self-limiting or may require iron supplementation, treatment of the underlying condition, or transfusion, and it is identified through measurement of haemoglobin and related blood indices. The journal International Journal of Neonatology publishes peer-reviewed research on the health of newborns, including the diagnosis and management of conditions affecting the fetus and neonate during the critical first period of life. This page gathers open-access scholarship relevant to neonatal health, supporting evidence-based understanding of anaemia and other conditions that affect newborn infants and their development.
