Overview
Chronic inflammation is a prolonged, persistent inflammatory response in which the body's immune system remains activated over weeks, months, or years, rather than resolving after the short-term reaction that normally follows injury or infection. While acute inflammation is a protective process, sustained inflammation can damage healthy tissue, disrupt normal organ function, and contribute to a wide range of diseases. It is implicated in conditions such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, certain cancers, neurodegenerative disorders, and chronic pain, and it is influenced by factors including diet, the microbiome, and persistent immune stimulation. Understanding and managing chronic inflammation is therefore central to the prevention and treatment of many long-term illnesses. Research relevant to this topic includes work on developing cellular and molecular biomarkers for the anti-inflammatory activities of probiotic bacteria in fermented foods, a study of auricular vagus nerve stimulation showing improvement in chronic pain alongside changes in pain-related cytokine levels, and an examination of how knowledge of the microbiota may help establish an optimal diet for maintaining health. Additional work has explored the relationship between frailty and the immune system. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to the mechanisms, consequences, and management of chronic inflammation.
