Overview

Drug delivery systems are the formulations, devices, and technologies used to transport a pharmaceutical agent to its site of action in the body in a controlled and effective manner. Their goal is to deliver therapeutic concentrations of a drug where and when it is needed while limiting exposure of healthy tissue, thereby improving efficacy and reducing side effects. These systems range from conventional tablets, capsules, and injections to advanced carriers such as nanoparticles, liposomes, polymeric matrices, transdermal patches, and stimulus-responsive vehicles that release their payload in response to local conditions like pH. In oncology and chemotherapy research, targeted and responsive delivery is a particular focus, since selectively concentrating cytotoxic drugs at tumours can spare normal cells. Within this journal's scope, related research includes work on pH-sensitive nanomedicine for treating gynaecological cancers, illustrating stimulus-responsive carriers for tumour-directed therapy; the synthesis and assessment of a tetrahydrogeraniol derivative as a penetration enhancer for transdermal delivery; and an exploration of the nanomedicinal features of Ayurvedic bhasmas. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to drug delivery systems and strategies for improving the precision and safety of pharmacological treatment.
