Overview

Inflammatory arthritis is a group of joint disorders driven by abnormal immune-mediated inflammation rather than by wear-and-tear degeneration. It is characterized by chronic inflammation of the joint lining, producing pain, swelling, redness, warmth, and stiffness that is often worse after rest, and it can affect multiple joints symmetrically as well as other organ systems. Conditions in this category include rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, and juvenile idiopathic arthritis, all of which arise from a dysregulated immune response that, if uncontrolled, can erode cartilage and bone and lead to joint deformity and disability. Because the disease is systemic, it is also associated with complications beyond the joints, underscoring the importance of early diagnosis and treatment to suppress inflammation and preserve function. Within arthritis research and therapy, inflammatory arthritis is studied alongside related rheumatologic conditions, with attention to its mechanisms, clinical features, and management. Related research on septic arthritis of the knee and on treatments evaluated in knee arthritis reflects the broader field's interest in joint inflammation and its consequences. This page reflects the scope of arthritis research in examining inflammatory joint disease, and gathers peer-reviewed, open-access material relevant to the immunology, clinical course, and treatment of inflammatory arthritis.
