Overview

Plant biology focused on plant-environment interactions examines how plants grow, develop, and respond to the biological and physical conditions of their surroundings. It encompasses the mechanisms by which plants cope with abiotic factors such as light, temperature, water, and nutrient availability, as well as biotic challenges including pathogens, herbivores, and competing organisms. Understanding these interactions is central to plant science because they govern productivity, stress tolerance, and survival, and they have direct implications for agriculture, food security, and ecosystem function under changing environmental conditions. A key dimension of plant-environment interaction is the molecular response to disease-causing organisms, illustrated by "Identification and Expression Analysis of Fragaria Vesca MLO Genes Involved in Interaction with Powdery Mildew (Podosphaera Aphanis)" (2017), which characterizes plant genes that mediate susceptibility to a fungal pathogen and thereby shows how plants detect and respond to biotic stress at the genetic level. Such studies reveal the regulatory pathways plants deploy when confronting environmental pressures. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to plant biology and plant-environment interactions, supporting researchers investigating how plants sense and adapt to their environment, including their defenses against pathogens and their responses to stress.
