Overview

Molecular cytogenetics is a field of genetics that studies chromosomes at the molecular level, combining the traditional examination of chromosome number and structure under the microscope with molecular techniques that label and detect specific DNA sequences. Methods such as fluorescence in situ hybridization allow researchers to locate particular genes or regions on chromosomes, identify gains, losses, and rearrangements, and detect abnormalities too subtle to see by conventional staining alone. The approach is widely used to diagnose genetic disorders, characterize cancers, and study how chromosomal changes relate to disease. Molecular cytogenetics sits within the scope of Advanced Cytology, which addresses cells, chromosomes, and the molecular tools used to analyse them. Research in this broad field examines chromosomal and genetic alterations in disease, including the classification and treatment outcomes of cancers where genetic features influence diagnosis and management. Such work reflects how the analysis of chromosomes and DNA at the cellular level supports both diagnosis and the understanding of disease biology. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to molecular cytogenetics and the chromosomal study of cells.
