Overview

Cellular immunology is the branch of immunology concerned with the cells of the immune system and the mechanisms by which they recognise and respond to threats. It focuses on how cells such as T lymphocytes, B lymphocytes, macrophages, dendritic cells, natural killer cells, and other leukocytes detect foreign organisms, coordinate defensive responses, and distinguish self from non-self. Central topics include antigen presentation, cell-mediated immunity, the activation and differentiation of immune cells, cytokine signalling, immunological memory, and the regulation that prevents the immune system from attacking the body's own tissues. Understanding these cellular processes is fundamental to explaining how the body defends against bacterial, viral, and parasitic infection, and to research on cancer immunology, autoimmunity, transplantation, and vaccine development. In a comparative and evolutionary frame, the study of immune cells extends beyond vertebrates to invertebrate hosts, where circulating cells called hemocytes carry out analogous defensive functions, offering insight into the origins and conservation of cellular immune mechanisms. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to cellular immunology and the biology of immune cells.
